Rentals for April 29th

April 29, 2008

There are four big releases on DVD today, the most exciting is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The true story of the editor of Elle magazine who in 1995 became completely paralyzed. All that remained was his left eyelid and with the help of a therapist, he told the story of his struggle locked inside his frozen body. The film was nominated for 4 Oscars and countless other awards. It won 2 Golden Globes for Best Director ad Best Foreign Language film and 2 Independent Spirit Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Director. If you still haven’t seen it rent it tomorrow.

27 Dresses was a star vehicle for Katherine Heigl whose Grey’s Anatomy popularity was thought to drive enough people to the movie. So far its brought in $76 million which is pretty successful for a romantic comedy. However, critics have had little nice things to say about the film. Still, I’m a softie for romantic comedy and will rent it sometime soon.

The Golden Compass was the movie adaptation of the popular children’s book. Lyra is from an alternate universe, living in Oxford (the other one across the pond). A complicated new world that involves children being kidnapped, Lyra is the hero of the story. The film cost $180 million and only has brought in $70 million so far. We shall see how rental and DVD sales go. I am still looking forward to seeing it.

How She Move is the Canadian female version of Stomp the Yard. After her sister’s death to drug addiction a high school student leaves her private school and returns to her old neighborhood. The film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance. The film doesn’t really step outside of the formula for a dance movie, but the moves are pretty entertaining.
